On 7 August 2015 my Connecticut driver’s license expires. On 22 July 2015 I headed to the Columbus Ohio Motor Vehicle office to apply for my first new Driver's License in 49 years. Every document needed except a Birth Certificate was found. My US Army document file was chosen as a stand in because those official documents listed by place of birth. Good try, but the nice lady at Motor Vehicle shook her head 'No'. A week later, at a cost of $43, the real Georgia birth certificate arrived. The next day as I gathered up all my documents in preparation for a new attempt at Motor Vehicle, I heard The-VOICE- say: "Take your Army records." Instantly I said out loud: "Nah. They're not on the list!" So, leaving the US Army documents behind I made my way to Motor Vehicle. Two hours later I am standing with the person who will make the final decision. After I answered a long list of questions she says: "I will have to go get this signed." I waited and she finally walked back with a smile. Now the final set of questions indicating that I was approved, how to pay, etc. were easy, but out of the blue she says "Did you serve in the Armed Forces?" I said: "Yes, Army." She then said: "Thank you for your service would you like the US Army seal on your license?" I said: "Yes, thank you." Then the fateful question: "I just need proof of your US Army service." I stood there in shock remembering what The-VOICE- had said to me: "Take your Army records!" I literally could not speak for a few seconds. In almost a whisper I said to the smiling lady: "I left all my Army records home." Her response: "When you renew in four years you can add it then." I drove away that day happy to have my license but sad that my Army service would not be listed on it. Quite frankly I was in shock! How did it happen? How did I miss hearing The-VOICE-?

 

     I did hear The-VOICE-, BUT there is a constant battle between my spiritual and intellectual sides. In my rush, I defaulted to my old way of doing things! It takes constant vigilance and prayer to stay in shalom so to hear!
