"Give him your card!"
29 Sivan 5777 (16 June 2017) Friday Afternoon
We had a lively conversation full of laughter ranging over a a myriad of topics in just a few moments, and yet as I walked away it occurred to me that I did not even know his name! Laughter, banter, joy, happiness --- connection. What had started the conversation? How did it progress? Regardless as I resumed my six mile Walk-N-Pray there was no doubt that this was far more than a casual conversation. No, I was convinced that there was far more in it than I understood, so that it became a point of prayer during the remainder of the walk.
Exactly two weeks later I was a block away from the same house and noted that my new “friend” was just then walking out to do some more of the same work. I was overjoyed to see him, and picked up my pace so I would not miss him. Our conversation renewed, but now it felt like we were old friends. As we talked a sense came over me that this is larger than I understood. It was like a velvet storm ---intellectually, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I was listening intently to this man talk as all of this washed over me, and then I heard—
–The-VOICE- say: “Give him your card”
I hesitated quite a while listening and then out of the blue with no connection to any of our conversation I asked: “Are you Jewish?” All conversation ended while we locked into intense eye contact. My new friend said: “Funny you should ask. Two weeks ago my family discovered that we are Jewish.” There are no coincedences! Two weeks ago we had our first conversation, setting the stage for today. He proceeded to explain the question of his lifetime. The question I have heard over and over again. Why did… and the details are always unique but the meaning unmistakable. Jewish practice, still practiced but disconnected from its meaning, and therefore the meaning is lost in time. My new friend explained that all his life he had wondered and now he knew. Finally I pulled out my card and using the back, I explained his Messiah from a Jewish point of view.
It was a long conversation filled with deep emotion, and three or four handshakes. I said to him the same that I have said many times: “God is gathering His People.” When I was finally breaking away, I turned back one last time, getting his attention We stood thirty feet apart and I said: “If no has ever, may it now be so, that I am the first ever in your life to say “Shabbat Shalom!”
If one of yours was scattered to the far end of the sky
…he will go there and get you.
Deuteronomy 30: (CJB)
1.“When the time arrives that all these things have come upon you, both the blessing and the curse which I have presented to you; and you are there among the nations to which Adonai your God has driven you; then, at last, you will start thinking about what has happened to you; 2. and you will return to Adonai your God and pay attention to what he has said, which will be exactly what I am ordering you to do today — you and your children, with all your heart and all your being. 3. At that point, Adonai your God will reverse your exile and show you mercy; he will return and gather you from all the peoples to which Adonai your God scattered you. 4. If one of yours was scattered to the far end of the sky, Adonai your God will gather you even from there; he will go there and get you. 5. Adonai your God will bring you back into the land your ancestors possessed, and you will possess it; he will make you prosper there, and you will become even more numerous than your ancestors. 6. Then Adonai your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your children, so that you will love Adonai your God with all your heart and all your being, and thus you will live
