Dateline: Spring 1962, Blythe, Georgia, Seventh Grade

     Bored with class, sitting in the very last seat in the back, and looking for something to do, I realized that there was a textbook with nothing on the brown paper cover. For the next four hours I colored onto the plain brown grocery bag book cover, an image of what Earth would like from far out in space. The picture to the left with the NASA image is very close to what I remember. Finished with that, I colored onto the paper the image of a hand as if it were the hand of Our Creator hovering over the Earth casting a shadow on it. I leave the hand off of this picture because to draw it would be a violation of The Second Commandment.

 

     After I was finished, I just sat there looking at the small earth and large hand. All of a sudden, with the sound of a large booming voice I heard: “America is declining!” I looked up from my art work in shock, trying to figure out who had said that and from where? The only male voice I could think of was the Principal whose office had a door into our classroom. Yet that was not his voice.

 

     I looked at my friend across the aisle and said “Who said that?” He was afraid to answer and just mouthed “Who? What? With that I said out load again: “Who said that?” My friend looked at me in stark fear, pantomiming “I have no idea what you are talking about.” Questioning my friend just deepened the mystery. When we finally went out for recess, I went to every friend with the same question. “Who said that?” Each time I explained what I had heard, the reaction was the same. “No one said anything. What are you talking about?”

 

     There was never anyone who could explain what I had heard for the first time in my life. In fact for the remainder of my “church life” I was constantly told by Pastors, Priests, Rabbis, Congregational Leaders and others in their own little way or another: “God does not speak to anyone anymore.” There was no one to guide and help me understand. So as an adult in my thirties I prayed for “whatever it was to -GO AWAY-! And it did. For 32 years from about the age of 26 until the age of about 58, My Elohim speaking to me, went away! Finally I came back to faith from atheism in 2005 and by 2007 what was back? -The-VOICE-!
